Abstract: We propose a new multiscale approach for the total-variation denoising problem with L2-type discrepancy, also known as the Rudin-Osher-Fatemi (ROF) model. A multiscale formulation of this problem is derived that includes the simultaneous representation of the sought variables on multiple grids and imposes respective interpolation constraints between different scales. The resulting multigrid objective function is then a sum of pointwise maxima of convex functionals, and it is shown to be equivalent to the ROF problem in a suitable sense. We present a minimization algorithm and computational experiments[hide abstract]
